BOTOX ® Sweat Treatment

BOTOX ® sweat treatment is used to control the symptoms of severe underarm sweating on which medical creams do not have sufficient effect

What can be treated with BOTOX?

Sweating is nature's own way of regulating body temperature, but people who suffer from hyperhidrosis - excessive sweating - produce much more sweat than is necessary. BOTOX ® sweat treatment is an effective method that provides a long-lasting effect.

In addition to sweat treatment, BOTOX ® is also used to treat wrinkles and migraines.

How is BOTOX sweat treatment carried out?

There is always a consultation before a BOTOX ® sweat treatment during which one receives comprehensive information regarding preparations prior to the treatment, the treatment itself and what happens afterwards.

Local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated. In order to determine the extent of the area to be treated, a sweat treatment test is carried out that indicates those areas that are most affected. Using a thin needle, BOTOX ® is then injected into the most pronounced areas, distributed via multiple injections. The treatment takes up to one hour, including the time spent waiting for the anaesthetic cream to take effect.

How does BOTOX ® work?

BOTOX ® contains Botulinum toxin type A. BOTOX ® inhibits sweat secretion by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. BOTOX ® sweat treatment temporarily stops sweating in the treated area only. Elsewhere, sweat is produced as normal. Where does the sweat go? It goes nowhere because the sweat is simply not produced in the area being treated with BOTOX ®. The rest of the body is free to produce sweat as usual.

It may take up to a week before the treatment begins to work. The efficacy of BOTOX ® sweat treatment is transient and should be repeated. On average, the effects last 4-12 months after the initial treatment.
Undesirable side effects after the use of BOTOX ® are very rare. The most common side effect is a slight tenderness or bruising at the injection sites a few days after treatment.

Can everyone be treated with BOTOX ®?

In general, anyone may be treated with BOTOX ® with the exception of the following:

  • Pregnant women or women who are breast feeding.
  • Anyone who has a skin infection in the area to be treated.
  • Anyone who is allergic to any of the active ingredients in BOTOX ® (see the Common catalogue for the ingredients).
Anyone who has had an allergic reaction to other botulinum toxin products, such as Azzalure® or Dysport®.
