Exposure to the sun accelerates the skin's aging process, and millions of people develop pigment spots at some point in their lives. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to do something about it. The first step in minimizing the development of pigmented lesions is to protect yourself from the sun. Beyond this, treatment is recommended with IPL or the Fraxel laser in combination with Jan Marini Skin Research medical skin care products.
Each of Ellipse Klinikken's products are tested and medically documented.
You should expect an average of 2-4 treatments with approximately 4 week intervals, as well as maintenance treatments as needed.
How is the treatment carried out?
A consultation is always carried out before treatment with IPL for pigment spots. During the consultation, we will go through the information sheet, the treatment itself and what happens afterwards.
Before treatment, the skin is cleansed, and we apply a gel to enhance light penetration into the skin so that it reaches the areas it will treat.
The light from the applicator is absorbed by the skin's natural enzyme, melanin, in the pigment spots. This is converted into heat that destroys those parts of the cell where the melanin is stored.
The actual treatment is completed within 15 minutes, and the skin may feel slightly warm.
When the pigment is eliminated from the skin, it may appear slightly “dirty”. This process can take from 5-12 days before everything is gone. You can use makeup to conceal this during this period. After treatment, you can go straight back to work.
How does the treatment work?
Second generation Intense Pulsed Light (I²PL) is more effective than first generation since it has an additional filter that removes infrared light (this is absorbed by the fluid in the tissue). This makes for a safer treatment that is more effective in that it uses less energy and does not need external cooling.
Thus, during treatment, one achieves the correct penetration depth and optimum absorption of the melanin in the pigment spots that are to be treated. The short burst of light is set to heat up the target to the correct temperature without damaging the surrounding tissue. The risk of side effects is then also reduced.
In order to perform a treatment, you should not be tan, and you must not have been in the sun for the last 4 weeks before treatment. After the treatment, you should use cream with SPF 30 and not expose the treated area to the sun for the following 4 weeks.
