Tooth whitening with BriteSmile

One of the first things you notice about a person is their smile. Over time, the natural aging process and our lifestyle (smoking, coffee, tea, wine, etc.) can affect the appearance of our teeth. BriteSmile tooth whitening is safe, gentle and effective. It bleaches in just 2 hours and leaves your teeth with a fresh, white, natural result.

What can be treated with BriteSmile?

All healthy, whole, natural teeth can be treated with BriteSmile tooth whitening. BriteSmile tooth whitening will help teeth with discolorations, stains and a generally darker colour. Crowns, bridges, dentures, etc. will not be bleached whiter than the base they had when they were inserted.

How is treatment with BriteSmile carried out?

Prior to treatment, you will be examined by a dental hygienist before treatment can begin. A special mouth guard is inserted into your mouth to enable access to your teeth.

A special protection cream is applied over your gums and hardened with a curing lamp. This provides a protective barrier for your gums before BriteSmile’s bleaching gel is applied to the outside of the upper and lower teeth (not molars). The bleaching gel contains 15% hydrogen peroxide, as well as glycerine and purified water to avoid dehydration. Photosensitive particles are added to the gel. Once the gel is put on, a blue light is directed onto the teeth. When light meets the gel, it activates and accelerates the lightening process safely. The patented light in the BriteSmile tooth whitening system emits no heat, contains no UV light and has been tested and found not to harm the enamel, gums or other surrounding tissue. You will lie with the light directed against your teeth for 20 minutes. Then the old hydrogen peroxide is removed, and new gel applied, and you have another 20 minutes with the light. This sequence is repeated a total of 3-4 times.

In about 2 hours, BriteSmile will give you teeth that are on average 8 shades whiter than before. In most cases, the effect will last for 2-4 years. This will obviously be affected by dental hygiene and habits such as smoking and drinking coffee. The Ellipse Clinic offers excellent products for maintenance at home for those who want to retain results even longer. BriteSmile toothpaste and BriteSmile To Go whitening pens are great products to have at home for those days with lots of coffee/tea/smoke, etc.  All teeth have a protective protein layer. This layer is removed during processing, and it takes about 24 hours to rebuild. During this period, we ask you to avoid foods and drinks with strong colours. Your teeth may feel slightly sensitive during this period. If necessary, you may relieve this with whatever you would take for a headache.

Can everyone be treated?

In general, anyone can be treated as long as your teeth are healthy and whole. Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should, however, wait until after birth/breastfeeding before having their teeth bleached. If you have crowns and bridges, bleaching is possible, but crowns and bridges will not be whiter than they were initially.

Anyone who wishes to use BriteSmile tooth whitening should have visited their dentist within the 6 months prior to treatment. This is to ensure that you do not have cavities in your teeth. If you are undergoing treatment for cavities, you should not bleach your teeth until treatment is completed.

From experience, we know that many people often wish to combine BriteSmile tooth whitening with
Restylane® lip treatment. Please note that you should bleach first and then have the Restylane® treatment afterwards.

Benefits of BriteSmile tooth whitening:

• More even results and less discomfort than with home bleaching.

• Only 24 hours without coloured food and drink. With home bleaching, you often need to be careful during the whole bleaching period, which can range from 5-14 days.

• An experienced dentist or dental hygienist performs the treatment.

• Low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide because of the combination with light.

• Immediate results after the first visit.
