Sclerosing of the legs

Sclerosing of telangiectasias (broken capillaries) in the legs. Sclerosing treatment can reduce or remove visible telangiectasias on the legs.

What can be treated?

Superficial veins on the legs and thighs.

How is the treatment carried out?

A consultation is always carried out before treatment for sclerosing. During the consultation, we will go through the information sheet, the treatment itself and what happens afterwards.

The treatment area is disinfected before injecting the local irritant substance with a very thin needle. The only discomfort is a little light stinging, and it causes less discomfort than laser treatment.

After treatment, the treated area will be slightly red and swollen and may itch a little. This is temporary and will pass within a short time. During sclerosing treatment, one must wear compression stockings that cover the entire treatment area. These must be used for the first 24 hours and then during the daytime for 14 days. During the period in which the stockings are being used, you should not do any exercises that exert great pressure on the veins.

The treatment on the legs functions well for most people with superficial veins, but for some, it is not so effective.  You should reckon on an average of 3-5 treatments with approximately 4 week intervals.

The treatment is painless for most people. You should not be too tan during treatment, and be careful in the sun for 4 weeks after treatment.

How does the treatment work?

The best and most gentle treatment of telangiectasias on the legs is sclerosing, which consists of injecting a local irritant substance that closes the vein. The method is suitable for blood vessels smaller than two to three millimetres. Telangiectasias with a diameter greater than 3 mm should be treated with surgery.

Can everyone be treated?

In principle, anyone can receive sclerosing treatment with the following exceptions:

• Pregnant women or women who are breast feeding

• Those with a skin infection in the proposed treatment area

• Do not use blood-thinning medication during the last 4 days prior to treatment – you should consult your own doctor about this

• Epileptics (can be treated, but notify the therapist before the commencement of treatment)

Benefits of sclerosing:

• Effective
• Gentle and without discomfort
• Can go directly back to work
